I know these corbeaux well! I've discovered that if you take very small steps and keep your arms to your sides you can approach quite close, to within 12 or 15 feet, as they scavenge on the shingle -- but if you raise your arms, they suddenly take alarm and fly off to a safer spot down the beach.

Occasionally the neighbourhood dogs (including ours) kill an agouti or a manicou that ventures out from the forest on the hill in Cascade, and then we've had them (corbeaux) close to our house, even perching on the roof, each politely taking its turn. I find them rather spooky.
